The Solid Waste Utility offers residents weekly curbside collection of trash, yard waste (which is landfilled) and recycling. Please secure all material in disposable bags (beginning February 1, 2021, only City of Columbia logoed bags will be picked up)

Please do not place trash in garbage cans; they will not be emptied.

Curbside collection begins at 7:30 a.m.

Customers who are physically challenged may arrange for special pickup at no additional cost. Please see below for details.

Items such as demolition debris, automotive parts, hazardous materials, whole tires and felled trees cannot be collected with regular garbage.

For disposal options, call 573.874.CITY (2489) .

Special Assistance for Customers with Physical Limitations

Customers with physical limitations who cannot set trash and recycling curbside are eligible for assistance. Simply have your physician send a note, on the physician’s letterhead, which states the resident’s name and address. Send the note to:

Solid Waste Administration Bldg.
5700 Peabody Rd
Columbia, MO 65202

The note should indicate that the resident has a physical limitation and can not place their trash or recycling curbside.  Once documentation is received, the collection crews will then collect the bags from the residence (e.g. just outside of the garage door, carport, etc.). Our crews can not enter a garage or residence to collect materials.  If you have additional questions about the program, please call the Contact Center at 573-874-CITY(2489).

Bulky Item Pickup

To arrange a pickup of bulky items, call the Solid Waste Utility or complete the online request form prior to your scheduled refuse day. Bulky items are defined as normal household items that will not fit in a refuse bag. This would include items such as chairs, sofas, tables, etc.  Specifically prohibited items are materials resulting from the erection, destruction or remodeling of a building, felled trees, large automobile parts, hazardous materials, etc. Solid Waste staff will contact you if more details are required, and will confirm your scheduled pickup day. For more information, call 573-874-CITY(2489).

Curbside Appliance Pickup

NEED AN APPLIANCE HAULED AWAY? Major appliances – washer, range, dryer, freezer, dehumidifier, stove, dishwasher, refrigerator, water heater, air conditioner, trash compactor, conventional oven – will be picked up on your regular trash day.  Call 573-874-CITY OR submit your request online before your scheduled trash day. Solid waste staff will contact you if more details are required, and will confirm your scheduled pickup day. The appliance will need to be curbside by 7:30 a.m. and fee will be added to your monthly utility bill. Please note: If the appliance and/or other Bulky Item is not curbside and/or someone takes the appliance from the curb, please call 573-874-2489 by 9am (leave a detailed voicemail if necessary) to cancel the pickup to avoid the fee.

  • $29.00 per appliance which has refrigerant (refrigerators, window air conditioners, etc.)
  • $21.50 per appliance which does not have refrigerant (stove, dishwasher, etc.)

Holiday Recycling and Trash Collection

Recycling and trash collection will be delayed one day during the week of a City-observed holiday.  Please download our smartphone app, COMO Recycle and Trash, to get reminders for your collection day. The calendar on this app is adjusted for the holidays.

The City of Columbia observes:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Friday after Thanksgiving (Even though City office are closed the Friday after Thanksgiving, curbside collection will resume. Thursday customers will be collected on Friday and Friday customers collected on Saturday.)
  • Christmas Day — see additional information regarding holiday recycling and Christmas tree disposal

Safety For Trash and Recycling Collectors

For your safety and the safety of the collection crew, please wrap broken glass, hypodermic needles, sharp metal, etc., and place them in a disposable container which will resist punctures.  This container may then be placed in your trash bag. Thank you for helping prevent injury to refuse collectors! The Health Department, (573)-874-7356, also offers a Red Box Program for the disposal of needles.

Unlawfully Placed Materials

The City Ordinance states an additional collection fee for trash, recyclables and yard waste unlawfully placed curbside prior to 4 p.m. on the day preceding normal collection will be billed to the account holder or property holder.  For residents who are unable to place trash out for collection on the normal day, please make alternate arrangements with a friend or neighbor. This policy does not affect individuals with certified medical problems who have prior arrangements for trash collected at the house.

If you have questions, please call the Contact Center at 573.874.CITY(2489).  To report improperly placed materials electronically, submit report form. Please help us keep Columbia clean.
