Strategic Plan 2020 update: groundwork complete

The groundwork for the 2020 Strategic Plan is complete and it is ready for the next step with City Council and department directors.

On Dec. 12, 2019, approximately 25 front line employees representing nearly every City department gathered for a strategic planning retreat. Participating employees requested a second retreat after their initial Oct. 17, 2019, retreat so they could improve the work they started on. At the Dec. 12, retreat, employees continued their discussions about what priorities were supported by data that should be included in the 2020 Strategic Plan and they listed out potential objectives for each priority area. Fun fact, participating employees shared their number of years of service to the City of Columbia and the combined group total was 238 years of service!

To create the proposed priorities and objectives, the front line employees used a variety of data, including information from the eight community focus groups, 10 Year Trend Manual, citizen survey, City employee engagement survey and other related documents.

City Council, City department directors, participating front line staff and the Strategic Plan Planning Committee will meet in January 2020 to consider the groundwork information and make decisions about what will be included in the next Strategic Plan.
