The Traffic Engineering Division manages the fabrication, installation and maintenance of approximately 20,000 traffic control and street signs; the painting of 1.2 million feet of pavement striping; the painting of curbs, crosswalks and symbols; and the calibration of traffic signals for more than 40 intersections. (Traffic signals on some major roads and intersections in Columbia are maintained by the Missouri Department of Transportation.) Traffic signals are programmed to minimize vehicle delay and emissions. Solar powered school zone display and warning devices are also implemented. Staff oversee neighborhood traffic programs and solutions for traffic calming in residential areas.
