Columbia Parks and Recreation offers a variety of special events throughout the year. Events showcase Columbia’s cultural diversity, encourage volunteerism and promote health and wellness. From preschoolers to seniors, special events also provide a lot of fun and entertainment.

JANUARY

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “At Home” Candlelight March
Jan. 18, 2021, 6-6:10 p.m. 

 

The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Candlelight March and memorial celebration won’t be held this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, we encourage you to plan your own march, safely.
Residents who would like to participate are encouraged to light a candle at 6 p.m. on Jan 18 and walk around their neighborhoods, concluding at 6:10 p.m. Marches should be planned safely with only members of the same household in a group.

ROC 7K Trail Run

Rhett’s Run at Cosmo Park (meet at Antimi Shelter)

 


Limited number of participants, COVID-19 guidelines will be in place.
Start your new year with Rhett’s Outdoor Challenge and enjoy a morning on Rhett’s Run. This 4.3 mile trail run will take racers through the scenic twists and turns of this hilly, well maintained single track course. All participants will receive a finisher item and a post race snack once they’ve completed their run. This event will include chip timing, age group awards, volunteer support and direction, and an aid station (water stop) on the course. Registration required.


 

Black History of Columbia exhibit

In conjunction with the CoMo200 bicentennial, come experience the Black History of Columbia. Historical information from the past 200 years is available. Free and open to all. 


 

Stonegrinder 7K Trail Run
Feb. 20, 2021, 9 a.m.
Capen Park/Grindstone Nature Area

Enjoy the beauty and challenge of the Grindstone Nature Area at the Stonegrinder 7K Trail Run! This race course will take you over diverse terrain including single track dirt trail that is rocky with areas, grass trails and a shallow water crossing. All participants will receive a finisher item and post race snack once they’ve completed their run. Price is $35 per runner, advance registration required.

Women’s Month Movie Night

Celebrate Easter safely with our EGGstravaganza Bags!  Bags contain 25 candy-filled plastic eggs so you can have your own hunts at home.  We recommend hunts be held within a household. This Easter, the bunny will be making his rounds to four Columbia parks! Kids will complete a scavenger hunt, searching for secret clues, take a safe and socially distanced photo with the Easter Bunny, and receive a goodie bag with Easter treats! Registration is limited to ONE date/location per family. ONE adult will be permitted to attend per child registered. There will be no on-site registration, all activities will be limited to registered participants only. Masks required.

Columbia Youth Intro Track Meet

Saturday, April 24, 2021, 9 am check in, 10 am event starts

Hickman High School Track

Learn about Track and Field in this event, open to youth ages 6-12. Registration forms available at Parks and Recreation office at #1 South 7th St. Deadline to register is April 22. Cost is $7 per child, copy of birth certificate or baptismal record is required.

MLB Jr. Home Run Derby

American Legion Park

The official MLB Home Run Derby provides kids across the country the opportunity to showcase their hitting skills in this exciting local contest. This is a free event that is open to all boys and girls ages 14 and under. Winners of  local and regional contests will advance and participate in a Home Run Derby contest during MLB All-Star week in July. American Legion Park

The official MLB skills competition provides kids across the country the opportunity to showcase their skills in this exciting local contest. Mom and Son Sports Challenge Obstacle Course

Ages 6-14, $5 per team of two
Bring your mom or mother figure in your life for an evening of friendly competition running through a sports obstacle course. You will be dribbling, throwing, balancing and running. All COVID-19 guidelines will be in place. Pre-registration required due to limited space.

All children are welcome to enjoy lunch in the park on weekdays! Lunch will be served at the Douglass Park shelter. This program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and the food program is carried out in a partnership between the City’s Health Department and Voluntary Action Center. Lunch is not served on July 4.

Visitors will be taken back to the traditions of the past. Listen, learn, and see history as it comes alive. See artisans and tradesmen dressed in 19th century attire demonstrating their trades and selling their wares. A large contemporary handmade craft area will also be featured. Enjoy entertainment on three stages including music, dancing and storytelling. Saturday Ghost Stories (8-9:30 pm) are sponsored by the Mid-Missouri Organization Storytellers.
