Columbia Parks & Recreation offers a variety of special events throughout the year. Events showcase Columbia’s cultural diversity, encourage volunteerism and promote health and wellness. From preschoolers to seniors, special events also provide a lot of fun and entertainment.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Candle Light March & Memorial Celebration

The candle light march will begin at 6:30 pm at Douglass High School, then proceed to the celebration. Open to all, free.

R.O.C. 7K Trail Run
Saturday, January 27, 2018 – 9 am

Rhett’s Run at Cosmo Park (Meet at Antimi Shelter)
The R.O.C. Trail Run is BACK! Start your new year with Rhett’s Outdoor Challenge and enjoy a morning on Rhett’s Run. This 4.3 mile trail run will take racers through the scenic twists and turns of this hilly, well maintained single track course. All participants will receive a finisher item and a post race snack once they’ve completed their run. This event will include chip timing, age group awards, volunteer support and direction, and an aid station (water stop) on the course. Registration required.

Blue Thunder Track Registration Day

Compete in running, jumping and throwing events! Youth ages 6-18 compete in out of town AAU meets along with some local meets.  This group is pushed hard in practice and expected to complete the season. The outdoor season is April-August. Annual Train Show

Kite Flying Day

Bring your kites and let’s have a great time! A number of kites will be given to children that do not have one to fly. Contest categories are Largest Flying Kite, Smallest Flying Kite & the Highest Flyer. Prizes will be awarded to winners. LET’S FILL THE SKY! Rain date is Saturday, April 22. Egg Hunt Eggstravaganza

Two hunts, two different parks! Bring your children (ages 12 and under) out for a free, fun candy-filled Egg Hunt. Each event will have hunts in different areas designated by age.  Kids will also enjoy other activities such as coloring, face painting, and games.  NOTE:  Please call 817-5077 if you or your organization would like to volunteer by hosting a game or activity. Yappy Hour
Saturday, April 15, 2017 – 3-6 pm 

Dog Park at Twin Lakes Recreation Area
$15 registration includes admission for one person and one dog, a t-shirt, a dog goody bag and a drink voucher
$5 registration includes admission for one person. Admission at the door will be $5 per pooch or person

Food truck, live music, craft beer, and room for Fido to roam will all be found when Yappy Hour returns! This event will feature dog related booths, activities, contests, an adoptable dog pageant and more. Sponsored by KFRU, KPLA, NASH-FM, BXR, Columbia Deck and Fence and Craft Beer Cellar. 
Important Info:

  • Limit one dog per person and all dogs must be on a fixed length leash (no retractable)
  • Must be 16 or older to attend, and 21+ to drink (we will be carding at the door)
  • All dogs must be up-to-date on vaccines
  • Please bring only well socialized pooches
  • Parking is limited so walking from Forum Nature Area or Scott Blvd trailheads is encouraged.

 

Columbia Youth Intro to Track and Field Meet

National Trails Day: Find the Golden Hiking Boot Treasure Hunt!
Saturday, June 3, 2017

Treasure hunt! Take a self-guided tour, find the golden hiking boot and win a $100 P&R gift certificate. We’ll post a riddle on our Facebook page and Twitter account at 7 am on June 3. Celebrate National Trails Day on Columbia’s newest trail! Join GetAbout Columbia staff on a slow-paced, 12.5 mile guided ride from Stephens Lake Park to the Links north of I-70. Shred Fest Skateboarding Event

All children are welcome to enjoy lunch in the park on weekdays! Lunch will be served at the Douglass Park shelter. This program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and the food program is carried out in a partnership between the City’s Health Department and Voluntary Action Center. Loop the City Guided Ride

Join us for a 20-mile loop ride around the City of Columbia. Plan to ride a mix of soft surface trails, bike lanes and streets with low to medium traffic volume. Participants must have intermediate on-road riding skills. Staff will provide SAG (support and gear) for minor maintenance issues. Columbia Parks and Recreation “Get Your Play On!” Photo Contest on Facebook

In honor of national “July is Parks and Recreation Month,” Columbia Parks and Recreation is hosting a Facebook photo contest. The national theme this year is “Get Your Play On!” Upload your best photos of your friends or family members “getting their play on” in CoMo. To be eligible, photos must be taken at a Columbia Parks and Recreation event, program, park, trail, or recreation facility. Contest participants must be 18 years or older. You can upload up to ten photos. Grand prize is $100 Parks and Rec gift certificate. Photo entries accepted through July 31, 2017. Annual Heritage Festival & Craft Show

Visitors will be taken back to the traditions of the past. Listen, learn, and see history as it comes alive. See artisans and tradesmen dressed in 19th century attire demonstrating their trades and selling their wares. A large contemporary handmade craft area will also be featured. Enjoy entertainment on two stages including music, dancing and storytelling. Saturday Ghost Stories (8-9:30 pm) are sponsored by the Mid-Missouri Organization Storytellers. FREE! Celebrate the International Mountain Bike Association’s Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day and pass along your passion for pedaling to kids! GetAbout Columbia invites you and your daughter or son (ages 9-14) to get your fun on while riding the bike skills course at Jay Dix Station. Experienced mountain bikers will be on hand to share tips and techniques. Kids will learn bike safety, trail etiquette and established rules of the trail. Pre-registration is mandatory. Space is limited. Each child must be accompanied by a parent with a bicycle. Registration closes at noon, October 5. Bear Creek Run – Half Marathon and Team Relay

Rocheport Fall Colors Trail Ride

Meet on MKT Trail, Scott Blvd access 
FREE! Join us for a scenic 26-mile trail ride along the Missouri River to Rocheport. Plan to bring or purchase lunch on your own at a Rocheport restaurant. Return with the group or at your own pace. Trail side support will be provided for minor maintenance issues. Please make sure you are self-supported with inner tube, patch kit and water. Helmets required. Registered participants will receive emails with updated weather-related cancellations, changes, etc.

Homeless Youth Awareness Month Dodgeball Tournament
Saturday, November 18, 2017, 10 am – 2 pm
Armory Sports Center

Co-sponsored with the Rainbow House, this fun-filled awareness event will have competitive and recreational brackets. Prizes awarded for first places in both brackets, best team name and most creative uniforms. Registration and payment due by November 17. Cost is $75 per team. Stonegrinder 7K Trail Run

Enjoy the beauty and challenge of the Grindstone Nature Area at the Stonegrinder 7K Trail Run! This race course will take you over diverse terrain including single track dirt trail that is rocky with areas, grass trailsand a shallow water crossing. All participants will receive a finisher item and post race snack once they’ve completed their run. Price is $35 per runner, advance registration required. Maximum of 125 racers. 

City Kwanzaa Celebration

Junior NBA Skills Challenge

Holiday Lights and Sights Tour

Enjoy some of the City’s most beautiful holiday lights from the comfort of a Parks and Recreation mini-bus! Tours depart from the ARC. For the safety of participants, each person must have a seat on the bus. Please bring a car seat for young children. Cost is $7.50 per person…pre-registration is required! Weather make up date is Dec 15.
