2017 Annual Park Improvement Projects

In Fiscal Year 2017, $160,000 was budgeted for major park maintenance and small renovation or enhancement projects. Projects were submitted for approval in the Capital Improvement Program, as part of the budget process. Any unused fund balance is reserved for potential grant matches, other unanticipated projects that may require mid-year funding, or rolled over to the next fiscal year for future projects. The projects below were chosen for 2017 annual park improvement projects. Details on each individual project follow.

Valleyview Park Improvements

Project Description: Replace playground equipment, install a water fountain and 6′ ADA walkway connecting the sidewalk along Garden Drive to the one table shelter and the new playground, and replace the backstop in the open playground.

Interested Parties Meeting: A meeting was held on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 from 5 – 7 p.m. at Valleyview Park, 2210 Garden Drive, Columbia, MO 65202. An online survey was available from June 15, 2017 until June 26, 2017.  View the commentsopens PDF file  received.

Project Notes: Park staff participated in the 2017 Show Me Healthy Communities Statewide Training Funding Initiative and received a $30,000 playground grant  from GameTime, Inc. for the playground at Valleyview Park. The funds were given in the way of a credit toward the purchase of the Valleyview playground. The Valleyview playground is designated as a GameTime national demonstration site for data collection that will contribute toward the publication of a White Paper to highlight best practices and outcomes achieved at park sites throughout Missouri in an effort to encourage children and families to be more active and increase park usage.

Waters House Improvements

Project Description: Project will include the remaining renovations to the Waters House located at the Waters-Moss Memorial Wildlife Area. Park staff will add ADA accessible restrooms, improve meeting area spaces and replace the exterior siding on the home.

Twin Lakes Recreation Area Bathhouse Renovations

Project Description: Interior and exterior renovations to the existing bathhouse used by park patrons and Little Mates Cove customers. Planned renovations will focus on new siding, doors plumbing fixtures and windows.

Bocce Court Construction

Project Description: Project will include the construction of 4 to 6 regulation Bocce courts at Columbia Cosmopolitan Recreation Area. Project will also include necessary ADA walkways to access the courts.
