Board and Commission Vacancies

The City Clerk is accepting applications for the following boards and commissions.

Applications must be in the City Clerk’s Office, 2nd Floor of City Hall, 701 E. Broadway, by 5:00 p.m., Friday, May 3, 2024. Applicants can either complete and submit the online application to the City Clerk or can complete the PDF format online and then print, sign, and submit it by mail to the City Clerk’s office for processing.

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION CODES COMMISSION: 3 vacancies with terms to expire August 1, 2024, August 1, 2025, and August 1, 2026. One regular member is needed from the following category: a person experienced in energy conservation, and one alternate member is needed from each of the following categories: a master plumber and a person experienced in fire prevention. The Commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly meetings are generally held on the fourth Monday of the month at 4:30 p.m.

COLUMBIA HOUSING AUTHORITY BOARD: 2 vacancies with terms to expire May 31, 2028. One must be a directly assisted resident of Housing Authority property or a resident of housing assistance in the tenant-based section 8 program of the Housing Authority, and both must be taxpayers who have resided in the City of Columbia for one year prior to appointment. Duties include overseeing housing developments. Monthly meetings generally held on the first Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. (Mayor’s Appointment)

COMMISSION ON CULTURAL AFFAIRS: 1 vacancy with term to expire October 31, 2025. Must be a resident of the City of Columbia or Boone County and demonstrate significant knowledge, interest, or expertise in one or more areas of the arts, including music, dance, literature, visual arts, theater, folk arts, media arts, design, and arts education. Shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the Commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the Commission, be a paid officer or employee of the City, be a party to any pending litigation against the City or be an elected public office holder. Selection of members shall be made so as to encourage representation of the social-economic, geographic, and demographic diversity of the community as well as representation of a wide range of stakeholders within the community including businesses, neighborhoods, and nonprofit and educational institutions. The Commission advises the Council in all matters pertaining to the arts and cultural environment of the City. Monthly meetings are generally held on the second Monday of the month at 4:15 p.m.

COMMUNITY LAND TRUST ORGANIZATION BOARD: 1 vacancy with term to expire December 1, 2027. Must be an occupant of a Community Land Trust home. The Board is organized to preserve the long-term affordability of housing units created through public subsidies. Monthly meetings are generally held on the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m.                  

DISABILITIES COMMISSION: 4 vacancies with terms to expire June 15, 2027. Two shall have a significant disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, one shall own or operate businesses within the Columbia area, and one shall have knowledge or experience in providing services to individuals with disabilities or an interest in the welfare of City residents with disabilities. All shall be residents of the City. The Commission considers concerns relating to residents with disabilities. Monthly meetings are generally held on the second Thursday of the month at 3:00 p.m.

FINANCE ADVISORY AND AUDIT COMMITTEE: 3 vacancies with terms to expire December 31, 2025, and December 31, 2027. Must have experience in one of the following categories: finance, investment management, financial statement analysis, or auditing, and be qualified voters and residents of the City for at least one year prior to appointment. Consideration shall be given to the appointment of at least one (1) member who is an owner of a business. The Committee makes recommendations on financial matters to the Council as needed. Monthly meetings are generally held on the third Monday of the month at 1:00 p.m.

PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION: 3 vacancies with terms to expire May 31, 2027. One member each is needed from Ward 1, Ward 5 and Ward 6. All must be registered qualified voters of the City and shall not be paid officers or employees of the City. The Commission acts in an advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to public recreation. Monthly meetings are generally held on the third Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION: 3 vacancies with terms to expire May 31, 2027, and May 31, 2028. Must be qualified voters and residents of the City for at least one year immediately prior to appointment, and shall hold no other office or position in City government. The Commission makes recommendations pertaining to planning and zoning-related issues. Meetings are generally held on the Thursdays following Council Meeting Mondays at 7:00 p.m.

YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL: 7 vacancies with terms to expire June 1, 2026, and June 1, 2027. Members shall be high school students between fourteen (14) and nineteen (19) years of age at the time of appointment. Consideration will be given to appointing a diverse group of members to include the various city wards, public and private high schools, and other elements of diversity whenever possible. The Youth Council shall advise the City Council in all matters pertaining to youth and youth-related issues. Monthly meetings are generally held on the second Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m.
