Waste Reduction and Recycling Education

Classroom Presentations

Schools, preschools, scout groups and day care providers love having Recycling Ambassador volunteers teach their kids about the environment.  Fun activities have been developed and successfully kid tested.  Seasoned volunteers are available to support you in learning how to work with kids. Volunteers are needed to:

  • help children with recycling activities and art projects.
  • assist with presentations/activities in the classroom
  • provide activities /projects for scouts meeting requirements for environmental badges

Adult Group Presentations

The City’s Recycling Program will provide either staff or volunteer presenters to give you the information you need concerning:

  • waste reduction and recycling
  • backyard composting and worm composting
  • household hazardous waste collection
  • municipal landfill, material recovery center, and compost facility
  • commercial waste reduction and recycling

Composting Workshops

Nature’s way to recycle! Learn the why, what and how of home composting.

2024 Home Composting Workshops 

  • Saturday, March 9 at the Missouri United Methodist Church from 1-2 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 24 at the Columbia Public Library from 6-7 p.m. 
  • Saturday, May 11 at the Columbia Farmers Market from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
  • Saturday, May 11 at the Columbia Farmers Market from 11 a.m.- 12 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 8 at Capen Park from 11 a.m.- 12 p.m. Home Composting 101
  • Tuesday, August 13 at the Britt Hall Community Garden/Fire Station #8 from 6-7 p.m.

2024 Bokashi Fermentation Composting Workshops

  • Tuesday, May 7 at Capen Park from 6-7 p.m.
