The City of Columbia operates a compost site near the Bioreactor Landfill. We collect yard waste that residents dispose at one of our Yard Waste Drop-off Centers. The decomposition of these materials occur over the next 2-4 months to produce compost that is dark and nutrient-rich. The compost quality and fertility is tested every year by the University of Missouri Soil and Plant Testing Lab.
There is no cost for residents to dispose tree limbs <8 feet, pallets, leaves or grass clippings at the compost site. Note: Large root balls and tree trunks ≥ 8 feet in length cannot be accepted for our compost operation. Those items can only be disposed in the landfill and will be charged the landfill rate.
Bulk compost for Sale
For individuals wanting to purchase compost, it is sold in bulk by the cubic yard. The fee is $20 (+tax) per cubic yard, with a minimum of 1 cubic yard per purchase. A loader will be on site to assist while supplies last. Call the Contact Center at 573.874.2489 to check for compost availability.

Compost is available for purchase by appointment Mondays through Saturdays year-round.
Patrons are also welcome 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays and 8 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of the month from March-May and September-October.
Composting workshops
Composting is nature’s way to recycle organics. Composting is the solution for yard waste and produces a usable product. Place the finished compost around trees, shrubs, or spread over yard and garden. Attend a free composting workshop and start composting.
