About the artist
Born in Iowa, Crown received both a BFA and an MFA at The Art Institute of Chicago in 1940 and 1946 respectively. Rarely painting in the confines of a studio, Crown preferred to be in the presence of his subject material and to have a fresh or radical idea about each subject.
Crown received a lifetime Achievement Award from the Watercolor USA Honor Society in 2003. His work can be found in the Phillips Collection, Washington DC; Anne S.K. Brown Military Collection, Brown University, Providence, RI and The Gene Crain Collection of California Watercolors, Laguna Beach, CA.
