About the artwork

Columbia has numerous landmarks to represent its many virtues. I’ve chosen the Broadway Diner for its unpretentious qualities, for enduring as a low-key, people-oriented island in a sea of academic and business structures. To me, this diner represents a “down-home” refuge from our often impersonal technocratic lives.

I’ve tried to highlight this unsung place by excluding its surroundings. The outside and inside lights, as well as the busy interior, suggest the vibrant, varied clientele found at popular Columbia places. Overall, this diner’s simplicity is juxtaposed with a sky full of movement, light, and energy.
