INTRODUCTORY
The City Council of the City of Columbia, Missouri met for
a special session at 6:00 p.m., on Tuesday, June 26, 2001, in the Council Chamber
of the City of Columbia, Missouri. The roll was taken with the following results:
Council Members HINDMAN, CRAYTON, JANKU, HUTTON, LOVELESS and COFFMAN were present.
Member JOHN was absent. The City Manager, City Counselor, and City Clerk were
also present.
NEW BUSINESS
R124-01 Authorizing a contract with
the U.S. Department of housing and Urban Development for purchase of
property
located at 606 West Worley Street.
The resolution was read by the Clerk.
Mr. Watkins explained that HUD has offered the City the opportunity
to purchase the property at 606 W. Worley for one dollar under their Dollar Home
Program. He noted that the program mandates that HUD foreclosed homes that have
not sold on the private market after 180 days be offered to local governments
for one dollar. Local governments have 10 days to accept the offer . This is
the first home of this type to be offered in Columbia. The property has been
looked over by the staff and Mr. Watkins said they feel $20,000 to $25,000 of
Community Development Block Grant money could bring it up to an appraised value
of $50,000. They felt this to be an opportunity to preserve a piece of affordable
housing.
Mayor Hindman felt this was a great opportunity for the City
and especially for the neighborhood. He said we could have enough control over
it to make sure it is, at the very least, owner occupied.
The vote on R124-01 was recorded as follows: VOTING YES: HINDMAN,
CRAYTON, JANKU, HUTTON, LOVELESS, COFFMAN. VOTING NO: NO ONE. ABSENT: JOHN. Resolution
declared adopted, reading as follows:
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Penny
