City of Columbia plow crews to report at 6 a.m. on Jan. 1 for anticipated winter weather event

(COLUMBIA, MO) - A 22-person City of Columbia Public Works crew will be reporting for duty at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 1 to respond to an anticipated winter weather event. Their initial focus will be on treating bridges, intersections and hills. As temperatures begin to fall below freezing on Saturday morning, rain is expected to change into a mix of sleet and freezing rain. As this occurs, crews will then shift their focus to treating first and second priority routes. Motorists are advised to drive with caution, as slickness is expected to be a major concern throughout the weekend.

Winter weather is expected to continue through Sunday, with total snow accumulations up to one inch. Due to the possibility of icy road conditions, residents are encouraged to stay at home during this winter weather event. If you are unable to stay home, please exercise prudent winter weather driving, keeping your speed low and headlights on. Please also avoid parking on priority roads whenever possible, which will leave fewer obstacles for City plow drivers to maneuver around, making treatment safer and more efficient.

Residents are reminded to remove snow from sidewalks adjacent to the property they own or rent; the City appreciates the effort to keep our sidewalks accessible.

Public Works and City staff will continue to closely monitor road conditions and adjust operational plans as needed. As winter weather can be unpredictable, residents are encouraged to closely monitor the forecast and changing road conditions throughout the mid-Missouri area.

Additional updates will be available via press release, on the City's social media pages and at CoMoSnow.com.
