City of Columbia and University of Missouri respond to vandalism of James Scott lynching marker

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Officials from the City of Columbia and the University of Missouri have been made aware that the historical marker on the MKT Trail commemorating the lynching of James T. Scott has been vandalized. The marker was removed from its base and recovered laying nearby.

The historical marker was unveiled by University of Missouri students five years ago to memorialize the 1923 lynching death of Scott. Scott was accused of a crime before he was dragged by a mob of people and hanged. He was a University of Missouri employee at the time

"Just one week after our community gathered to memorialize the lynching of James T. Scott, this marker has been vandalized. The news of this vandalism is tragic, especially so close to the anniversary of Scott’s death," said Columbia Mayor Brian Treece. "This is a blow, not just against the memory of this atrocity, but against our community conscience. The marker is a visual reminder that has been taken from us temporarily, but a new marker will allow the community to recognize the historical significance of events like this one for years to come."

The City and the University of Missouri are partnering to replace the marker with a new one as soon as possible. In the meantime, staff with the City will be working to create a temporary repair for the current marker.

"While I am very encouraged to see how immediately our community has come together to replace this important historical marker, it is yet another sign of how much work we have to do to combat racism in our community," said Mun Choi, president of the University of Missouri. "The University remains committed to ensuring that we are a welcoming community for every person of every color - faculty, staff, student and visitor. We work every day to further that commitment."

The Columbia Police Department is investigating the vandalism.

"The Columbia Police Department will be investigating any leads as they are provided.  In the meantime, we will work with Columbia Parks and Recreation to increase security for the site.  We ask that anyone with information contact the Columbia Police Department or Crimestoppers," said Columbia Police Chief Geoff Jones. "Those responsible should know the blatant disregard for the significance of this man’s death and the site is not welcomed here."

Anyone with information about this incident may contact the Columbia Police Department at 573.874.7652 or CrimeStoppers at 573.875.TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.
