Columbia Police investigate vehicle collision with The State Historical Society of Missouri building, 605 East Elm Street

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

On Sunday, April 4 at approximately 12:00 a.m., an officer with the Columbia Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding that was observed in the area of Stadium Boulevard and Ashland Road.

The officer was able to catch up to the vehicle in the area of Providence Road and Elm Street and activated the patrol car’s emergency equipment in order to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to stop for the officer. The suspect continued east on Elm Street. 

While driving east on Elm Street, the driver lost control of the vehicle at the intersection of Elm and Fifth Streets, crashing into a building. After crashing into the building, the driver fled on foot heading northeast. Officers pursued the suspect on foot and were able to take the driver into custody without further incident. 

The driver, identified as Gire Ngizahayo, 23, of Columbia, was arrested for DWI, speeding, careless and imprudent driving, resisting arrest and leaving the scene of an accident. 

This is an ongoing investigation. More information may become available at a later time.
