Public Health and Human Services creates process for vaccinating individuals who are homebound

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) is committed to getting a vaccine to everyone who wants one. In order to achieve this goal, PHHS is gathering information on individuals who are homebound and not able to travel to a mass vaccination clinic.

While vaccine supply remains limited, PHHS is preparing to vaccinate individuals who are homebound when doses become available. Boone County residents who are homebound and in Phase 1B, Tier 2, which includes those 65 and older and adults with certain medical conditions, can call 573.874.CITY (2489) to state their interest in getting the COVID-19 vaccine and share contact information. If an individual who is homebound has filled out the PHHS or MU Health Care survey for information, they should still call to be put on the home vaccination list. Information about the phases and tiers, as outlined by the state, can be found here: covidvaccine.mo.gov/priority.

While official documentation is not required, PHHS is using Medicare's classification of homebound, including the following:
  • The individual needs the help of another person or medical equipment such as crutches, a walker, or a wheelchair to leave home, or the individual's doctor believes that their health or illness could get worse if they leave home.
  • And, it is difficult for the individual to leave home and they typically cannot do so.

When vaccine doses become available, PHHS staff members will contact individuals who have declared interest to schedule a vaccination appointment.
