Columbia Police arrested Jerika D. Owens, 22, of Columbia for assault in the third and resisting arrest on Friday, Dec. 11.
Columbia Police were dispatched to the 300 block of Brewer Drive in reference to a report of a disturbance at approximately 6:30 p.m.
Joint Communications advised there was a female suspect with a gun and that she had tried to strike two individuals with the weapon. Officers arrived and found a physical assault had occurred, however, the suspect left the scene prior to officers’ arrival. During the investigation, the suspect was identified as Jerika D. Owens.
While officers were concluding the original investigation, the suspect’s vehicle returned to the scene with three occupants. Officers made contact and attempted to take Owens into custody, however, she began resisting. Officers called for emergency assistance due to her physically resisting and because a firearm was reported to be involved and in possession of the suspect. A search of the suspect’s vehicle yielded ammunition, but officers did not locate the firearm.
Officers learned another occupant of the suspect’s vehicle, identified as James E. McDaniel Jr., 28, of Columbia, had an active arrest warrant. Officers located marijuana in the vehicle that was within the immediate reach where McDaniel had been seated. Officers learned the warrant was non-extraditable, and so he was released after being issued a citation for possession of marijuana.
EMS was called to the scene and, after being evaluated, Owens was remanded to the Boone County Jail.
There were no injuries reported.
