Columbia Parks and Recreation offers "Outside the Box" activities

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

Columbia Parks and Recreation is offering "Outside the Box" activity box subscriptions for kids. For $10 each month, subscribers will receive a box filled with activities tailored to the month’s theme.

The boxes will contain all the ingredients needed for activities such as science experiments, art projects, crafts, goodies to eat, as well as instructions for additional activities you may want to do with household items. The boxes are recommended for children ages 5-10, but younger and older children (and children-at-heart) will enjoy many of the activities.

The October box’s theme is "Spooky Season" and includes materials and instructions for the following activities:

  • Frankenworms experiment
  • Origami paper and instructions for bat, vampire fangs and pumpkin
  • Ghost goo slime
  • Magic scratch eye mask
  • Pop crystal balloon blow-up
  • Spider web balloons
  • Creepy glow eyes
  • Color-in Day of the Dead poster
  • Candy, stickers, temporary tattoos, mini puzzle, and pumpkin carving stencils

Registration for Outside the Box must be set up in person at the Activity & Recreation Center (ARC), 1701 W Ash. Direct debit information including bank account number and routing number are required. The first box must be paid for at the time of registration. Subsequent months will be automatically debited.

Boxes will be available for pickup on the 15th of each month at either the ARC or Hillcrest Community Center, 1907 Hillcrest Drive. Availability is limited to 100 boxes per month at this time. An adult should review the box contents each month and should supervise younger children in assembling crafts and reading directions. Boxes may contain latex, small objects, and/or foodstuffs that may contain allergens.

The November box’s theme is "tie dye." For more information about Outside the Box, call Parks and Recreation at 573.874.7460.
