Residential Structure Fire on Jewell Avenue

(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 1:05pm on Wednesday, August 26, 2020.  The first unit arrived less than five minutes later and observed heavy smoke coming from the structure.  Occupants of the home exited safely and stated there were pets inside.

Crews deployed a pre-connected hose line and performed an aggressive fire attack in the basement.  Additional crews performed a rapid search of the first and second story, rescuing two cats and one dog.  An additional dog exited on its own.

The fire was brought under control in approximately twenty minutes and contained to the basement.  There were no reported injuries.  Fire and EMS crews provided oxygen to both cats who do not have observable injuries.

An Assistant Fire Marshal is on the scene performing a fire origin and cause investigation.  More details will be released as they become available.

Eight units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this call.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents, smoke alarms save lives.  You should have one on every floor of your home and outside spaces where people sleep.  Test your smoke alarms monthly by pressing the 'test' button.  Replace smoke alarm batteries every six months.  Smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years.

The Columbia Fire Department wants every home in Columbia to have a working smoke alarm.  If you own your home and need a smoke alarm call us at 573-874-7391, email us at [email protected] or come by Fire Administration at 201 Orr Street Monday through Friday 8am - 5pm to see if you qualify for a free smoke alarm.
