Columbia Parks and Recreation is canceling the Splat Jr. Obstacle Course Mud Run scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 15 in an effort to protect the health and safety of participants, spectators, volunteers, staff and the community due to current COVID-19 concerns.
Parks and Recreation staff have worked closely with the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services in making facility reopening and programming decisions. The extension of the current health order, limiting the size of public gatherings to 100 people into the month of August, led to the mutual decision to cancel Splat to maintain public safety.
In addition to limits on gathering sizes, ensuring social distancing and mask compliance at the event would be difficult to accomplish.
Parks and Recreation staff had postponed Splat from its original date of July 11 and reduced the number of participants and spectators in hopes of continuing the event.
This would have been the seventh year for the Splat mud run, which is held each summer at Gans Creek Recreation Area. The event is for kids ages 4-15 and in a typical year, would draw about 1,200 participants from across the region.
The next Splat mud run is scheduled for Saturday, July 10, 2021. All families currently registered for the 2020 event will receive a refund.
