Public Health Reminder: Stay COVID Aware this Independence Day weekend

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) has seen a noticeable increase in cases in the weeks following Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and Father’s Day. Due to this rapid increase, PHHS is urging residents to help slow the spread of the virus by staying COVID Aware during the Independence Day weekend.

In order to protect our families and loved ones, it's important to adjust our usual traditions by lowering the risk of exposure to COVID-19 as much as possible. We can do this by continuing to social distance from others outside of your household at all times. If you decide to gather with others, try to limit the amount of people as much as possible by keeping groups to 10 people or less.

Below are some ways to celebrate the holiday weekend while reducing the risk of exposure to the COVID-19 virus:
  • Barbecue or enjoy a meal with members of your household.
  • Avoid sharing food, drinks or other items with others.
  • Maintain a 6 foot distance from people outside of your household at all times. Space lawn chairs/seating at least 6 feet apart in order to maintain distance and discourage movement.
  • Wear a cloth face covering when gathering with others, both indoors and outdoors. Masks should be worn in conjunction with social distancing as a comprehensive, layered defense against the COVID-19 virus.
