The City of Columbia’s Housing Programs Division is pleased to announce a generous gift of $20,000 to the Columbia Community Land Trust for the construction of new, affordable and energy efficient homes at the Cullimore Cottages development. The gift was given in honor of Clara Miles, a prominent African American leader whose efforts helped lead to the end of segregation in Columbia and the establishment of the Miles Manor subdivision. Clara Miles, George Brooks and a group of 10 local African American families formed a corporation in 1959 and established the Miles Manor subdivision by 1962. Miles Manor homes still stand today and serve as a model for homeownership, economic opportunity and social justice.
The Columbia Community Land Trust is pleased to support and honor our past, while also working to further homeownership, economic opportunity and social justice for generations to come.
