Columbia Police are investigating a three motor vehicle collision that involved a City of Columbia Police vehicle on May 21.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., a CPD patrol vehicle was traveling Westbound on Nifong Boulevard approaching the intersection of Providence Road with lights and sirens heading to assist officers with an emergency incident, when it was struck by a silver 2011 Ford Escape.
Witnesses reported the patrol vehicle had slowed down and stopped to clear the intersection when the SUV, in the passing lane heading South on Providence Road, struck the police vehicle.
As a result, the police vehicle was pushed into the southbound turning lane of Nifong Boulevard and Providence Road, while the driver of the SUV also struck a second vehicle in the left turn lane.
Occupants of the SUV suffered non-life threatening injuries and were both taken to a local hospital. The officer also suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to urgent care for assessment per CPD policy.
The driver of the third vehicle reported that debris from the other vehicles struck their vehicle and reported no injuries. All drivers were found to be wearing their seatbelts.
This incident will be reviewed in accordance with CPD policy and procedure. Additional information may be available after the crash investigation is completed.
