Positive case of COVID-19 identified at Columbia assisted living facility on April 9

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

Late in the afternoon of Thursday, April 9, Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) was made aware of a positive COVID-19 case at Cedarhurst of Columbia assisted living center. PHHS is in contact with the facility as we investigate this case. This is the only positive case of COVID-19 that has been reported at the facility. At this time, Cedarhurst of Columbia is planning to test all residents and staff for the virus that causes COVID-19. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

The following statement was provided by Cedarhurst of Columbia:

Cedarhurst of Columbia Credits Vigilant COVID-19 Testing Protocols for Early Detection and Quarantine of Resident Who Tested Positive

A resident has tested positive for COVID-19. The resident was tested by a licensed nurse at Cedarhurst after registering a low fever, based on Cedarhurst's proactive monitoring and testing protocols. The organization has invested in its own supply of tests for the virus and has established a high standard for monitoring to maintain a safe environment for its residents and staff.

The resident remains at the community quarantined in her own apartment and presently has no symptoms. All other residents and staff are being tested by Cedarhurst. We have already been in contact with Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services. We are working jointly with them on this situation and plan to give our full cooperation to the department.

As leaders in senior care, maintaining a healthy environment and proactively preparing for threats such as COVID-19, are hallmarks of the Cedarhurst model. The organization puts significant resources into preventing exposed people from entering its communities and, in the event of a potential exposure, takes immediate action to limit the risk of further infection. Extensive details of our efforts can be found on our website at cedarhurstliving.com by clicking on the COVID-19 banner at the top of the page.

Cedarhurst's proactive response in testing is due to partnerships secured with two private accredited laboratories in early March with two additional accredited laboratory partnerships acquired in the last ten days. This preemptive planning allows us to test all residents and employees with any symptoms of COVID-19 or exposure to a person with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. We collect specimens using a nasopharyngeal swab administered by a licensed nurse which are then processed by one of the two accredited laboratories.
