Columbia City Manager John Glascock names Dave Sorrell as director of utilities - effective March 14
(COLUMBIA, MO) - On Friday, March 6, Columbia City Manager John Glascock announced the selection of Dave Sorrell as the new director of utilities for the City of Columbia, beginning March 14. Sorrell has more than 19 years of experience in municipal government in both engineering and management roles.
"Dave continues to impress me with his work ethic and professionalism. Having worked with all utility service lines in various capacities, Dave has the well-rounded experience needed to lead the department," Glascock said. "We are a full-service city and the utilities are vital to our community. I'm confident in Dave's leadership to continue to move the utilities forward to provide the community with the level of service they want and deserve."
Sorrell began with the City in 2001 as a civil engineer in the Public Works Department and moved over to the Water & Light Department (now the Utilities Department) as an engineering specialist in 2006. Before all the utility service lines were in one department, sewer, stormwater and solid waste were part of Public Works. Sorrell went back to Public Works in 2010 to serve as the sewer utility manager and transitioned to the engineering manager in charge of sewer and stormwater in 2012. In 2015, Sorrell became the assistant director of utilities managing all aspects of operations for the City's Sewer Utility, Stormwater Utility and Solid Waste Utility.
"I am proud and honored to be provided the opportunity to serve the City of Columbia as the utilities director. I am very excited about addressing the challenges of the Utilities Department with the goal of providing exceptional services to the community in a democratic, transparent and efficient manner in accordance with the City's mission," Sorrell said. "Having lived in Columbia for years, my family and I are very excited to continue being part of this diverse and wonderful community."
Sorrell has a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Missouri and holds a Professional Engineer license.
The utilities director position is currently held by Tad Johnsen who will retire on March 13.
Sorrell's annual salary will be $145,400 and includes the benefits package for department directors. A swearing-in ceremony will occur at the City Council meeting on Monday, March 16 at 7 p.m.
