Training for hands-on parks volunteer programs scheduled

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

The City of Columbia has three upcoming programs that provide residents with knowledge about natural resources and provide hands-on service projects in local parks.

The Columbia Aquatic Restoration Project (CARP) course will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30 and Thursday, Feb. 6. CARP is a volunteer program designed to support the Columbia Parks and Recreation Department in implementing an aquatic and shoreline management program. Volunteers work on projects along streams, ponds and rain gardens in local parks on weekend mornings. Participants should plan to attend both nights and share their time on projects.

The Adopt-a-Trail training will be held Tuesday, Feb. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. Volunteers are asked to care for a quarter-mile section of trail to remove invasive species and litter and work to establish new plants.

The TreeKeepers program will be a one-day academy format on Saturday, March 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  During the TreeKeepers Academy, volunteers will learn about tree identification, pruning and planting and commit to assisting on tree projects in local parks on Saturday mornings. Lunch will be provided.

All programs will be held at the Parks Management Center, 1507 Business Loop 70 West. To learn more or to register, contact Volunteer Programs at 573.874.7499 or [email protected].
