City of Columbia prepares for possible winter storm this weekend

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

A 22-person City of Columbia Public Works plow crew plans to report early Saturday morning, at 1 a.m., Jan. 11, to treat roads ahead of forecast icy conditions, with a new 22-person crew reporting at 7 a.m. Fleet staff plan to report one hour in advance of plow crews to finalize vehicle prep and respond to any mechanical/maintenance issues during the event. A private contractor is on standby to respond to any trees or tree limbs in the roadway.

Plow crews plan to begin pretreating/treating priority routes with salt pre-wetted by beet juice if the rain ends prior to the change to ice or snow. Motorists are advised to avoid driving during early morning hours when roads could become slick or icy very quickly. There is also a potential for a wintry mix and 1-3 inches of snow Saturday afternoon. Motorists are advised to drive with extreme caution and avoid travel, if possible, particularly during an active weather event.

Due to possible ice and strong winds, there is the possibility of power outages. If this occurs, Utility crews are on standby and will work to restore power as soon as possible. Customers can report a power outage by calling 573.875.2555 and view outages via the Outage Viewer: gis.gocolumbiamo.com/public%20outage%20map/

Go COMO, Columbia's public transit system, is currently scheduled to maintain its regular fixed route and para-transit services on Saturday, Jan. 11. Columbia Regional Airport is open to commercial and general aviation traffic. Individual airlines will determine their flight status into, and out of, COU. Travelers should check their flight status with their airline and arrive early to the airport

All available City resources will be utilized in responding to the storm to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our community members. City personnel will continue to closely monitor the weather and adjust operational plans as needed.

Additional updates will be available via press release, on the City's social media pages and CoMoSnow.com.
