**Date / Year REVISED**Residential Structure Fire on Unity Drive

(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 200-B Unity Drive on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at 2:46pm.  The first unit arrived on the scene less than five minutes later and reported smoke showing from a single story structure.  Citizens on the scene advised all occupants exited safely.

Fire crews deployed a pre-connected hose line and performed an aggressive fire attack.  The event was brought under control in approximately ten minutes.  An Assistant Fire Marshal was dispatched to perform a fire origin and cause investigation.

The investigation revealed the fire originated in the kitchen and was a result of unattended cooking.  Damage is estimated at $5,000 and was contained to the kitchen.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds citizens that smoke alarms save lives.  You should have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside spaces where people sleep.  Test your smoke alarms monthly by pushing the test button and replace smoke alarm batteries twice a year.
