(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 1107 North College Avenue on Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at 7:57pm. Units arrived on the scene less than four minutes later and observed smoke coming from the front door of a one story, single family residence.
Fire crews deployed a pre-connected hose line and performed an aggressive interior fire attack. The fire was contained to the kitchen and brought under control in approximately five minutes.
One occupant of the home sustained injuries to their lungs, hand and wrist and were transported to the hospital for further evaluation.
An Assistant Fire Marshal was dispatched to the scene to perform a fire origin and cause investigation. The origin of the fire was the stove top in the kitchen. The cause was unattended cooking. Damage is estimated at $4,170.
Cooking fires remain one of the leading cause of fires in Columbia. The Columbia Fire Department encourages citizens to never leave cooking unattended.
Eight units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this call. The only injuries reported were those of the single occupant.
