(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial structure fire at 500 Columbia Drive, Smithton Condo Apartments, apartment C, at 8:01am on Saturday, November 9, 2019.
First arriving units observed heavy smoke coming from a six-plex apartment building, evacuation of the building was in progress. Crews pulled a preconnected hoseline, advanced it into apartment C and began an aggressive fire attack. There were reports that some occupants were unaccounted for and could still be inside. Based on this information the incident commander upgraded to a second alarm, requesting additional equipment and personnel.
Fire crews were able to contain the fire to the kitchen in apartment C and confirm that all occupants were accounted for. Two residents were evaluated by ambulance personnel for smoke inhalation.
An Assistant Fire Marshal was dispatched to perform a fire origin and cause investigation. Additional details will be released as they become available.
