City of Columbia Public Works contractor Capital Concrete is scheduled to mill and overlay the 10th and Walnut Municipal Lot in the 1000 Block of Walnut Street, between 10th Street and Short Street, on Monday, Nov. 11, weather permitting. The lot will be closed to all vehicles while maintenance is taking place. Permit holders impacted by this closure may park in any hourly space in the Short Street Parking Garage, 1110 E. Walnut St.
On Aug. 19 City Council passed an ordinance amending Chapter 14 of the City Code to establish permit parking at the 10th and Walnut Municipal Lot due to the demand for more permit parking in the area. With the Short Street garage being in close proximity, it was determined there is adequate metered parking available within the area to makeup for the loss of metered spaces in the lot.
Parking Utility will redesign the lot layout in order to re-create compliant parking stalls in accordance with Section 29-4.3 of the City Code. This will result in a 12-foot driving lane and a reduction of the number of parking spaces from 24 to 17, with one of the spaces being ADA compliant. The one ADA compliant parking space will remain a public use space accompanied by a meter. Work is projected to be completed Thursday, Nov. 14, weather permitting.
The eight new permit spaces will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Individuals interested can contact the City's main number: 573.874.2489 to reserve a space, or come to the Public Works Department on the 3rd floor in City Hall (701 E. Broadway) to buy a permit. For those that reserve the space over the phone, it will be held for five days, during which time purchasers will need to come to the Public Works Department to purchase the space in person. If the space has not been purchased in five days, it will be re-opened for purchase.
