The City of Columbia Solid Waste Utility continues to experience severe collection staff shortages. Curbside recycling will not be collected Monday, Sept. 16, due to the staffing shortage of 22 employees.
The Solid Waste Utility currently has nine refuse collector positions vacant. In addition to these vacancies, there are an additional nine staff members unavailable due to injury or illness and four not available for other reasons.
For health and safety reasons, ensuring the collection of trash will require the City of Columbia Solid Waste Utility to concentrate first on curbside trash collection and secondly on curbside recycling collection. Temporary labor is being utilized as fully as possible to minimize the impact to the community.
At this time, it is too early to know if it will be possible to run the recycling routes a day behind normal collection schedule or if additional cancellations will be required this week.
Customers signed up to receive updates from our COMO Recycle and Trash app will be notified directly of service changes. The app is available for download on Apple and Android devices.
Customers may utilize the recycling drop-off centers that are placed around the community. View a map here: CoMo.gov/Utilities/SolidWaste/Recycling-Drop-Off-Centers.
We apologize for any inconvenience and thank our residents for their understanding.
