The Columbia Police Department responded to a report of shots fired Monday, Sept. 2, at 8:48 p.m., on I-70 just east of Stadium Blvd. in the eastbound lanes.
Officers found two people in a vehicle, one adult and one minor child, both with non-life threatening gunshot wounds to an extremity. Both were treated on scene and transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Statements from an adult in the vehicle which was shot at led to the overnight arrest of Demetris L. Shaw, 18, of Columbia. The suspect was charged with two counts of first-degree assault, one count of endangering the welfare of a child in the second-degree, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.
Two vehicles were involved. The suspect fired shots from their vehicle into another while on the road. CPD currently believe that this was not a random shooting and the individuals involved knew one another. This is an active investigation as detectives and patrol officers continue to follow up on additional leads and seek additional suspects.
Anyone with information on this incident is encouraged to contact the Columbia Police Department at 573.874.7652 or Crimestoppers at 573.875.TIPS to remain anonymous.
