The City of Columbia Public Works Department plans to finish the west side of the Forum Boulevard and Green Meadows Road roundabout on Tuesday, Sept. 3, weather permitting, and begin construction of the east side of the roundabout. The west side will reopen to traffic and the east side will close at Green Meadows Road. Forum Boulevard will continue to remain open throughout the project with the roundabout expected to open to traffic on all sides by this winter, weather permitting.
The roundabout, along with street lighting, stormwater improvements, utility relocations and sidewalks, is being constructed in phases to reduce the impact on traffic as much as possible. Construction of the west side of the roundabout began July 8.
Longer than normal traffic delays are likely during the remainder of construction so motorists are encouraged to use other major roads as alternate routes whenever possible. Steps are being taken to encourage motorists to drive slowly in the construction zone, including traffic signs, message boards and an increase in traffic patrols.
Emery Sapp and Sons, Inc. is the contractor for the project. Forum Boulevard is a four-lane divided road intersecting with Green Meadows, a two-lane street. The goal of the project is to increase safety and reduce congestion. Two interested parties meetings were held on April 28, 2016, and June 27, 2017. Public hearings occurred on Sept. 6, 2016, and Sept. 5, 2017. The estimated investment for the project is $1.2 million.
