UPDATE: Sixth and Cherry Parking Garage reopens after closure for maintenance

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

All floors of the Sixth and Cherry Parking Garage are now open for public use after it was closed for scheduled maintenance. Permit holders who have parked at the Fifth and Walnut Parking Garage or at bagged meters will need to move by Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 8 a.m. to avoid ticketing. City staff would like to thank all patrons for their patience during this time.

Original Release

The City of Columbia Parking Utility will begin maintenance to the Sixth and Cherry Parking Garage, 555 Locust St., on Friday, Aug. 16, weather permitting. Maintenance will include a complete wash down of the garage and a sealant applied after the drying of the parking surface. The purpose of the sealant is to create a water resistant barrier that will keep moisture from penetrating the parking surface. In order for the sealant to work properly, the surface must be clean and the sealant allowed to cure for 24 hours before traffic is allowed on the surface. The process of cleaning the garage, allowing it to dry, and correctly applying the sealant is projected to take five days, weather permitting.

From 2 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Aug. 16, the top level will be closed to all vehicles. Any vehicles remaining on the top floor will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. Some hourly spaces will be designated as permit parking during this time.

Starting at 6 p.m. on Aug. 16, the Sixth and Cherry Parking Garage will be closed to all permit holders and hourly parking. Any vehicles in the garage after 6 p.m. will be ticketed and towed at the owner's expense. This full closure is necessary so staff can efficiently complete the cleaning process on all parking garage surfaces.

Permit holders impacted by this closure may park in any permit space in the Fifth and Walnut Parking Garage, 500 E. Walnut St. Some hourly spaces in the Fifth and Walnut Parking Garage will be designated for Sixth and Cherry permit holders. Permit holders may also park by the bagged meters around the Sixth and Cherry Parking Garage, or bagged meters near Flat Branch Park on Fourth Street with their permit displayed.

Maintenance is scheduled to be completed and the garage to be reopened by Tuesday, Aug. 20, weather permitting.
