Cosmo Park bocce courts grand opening scheduled for July 10

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

Columbia Parks and Recreation will host a grand opening ceremony for the new bocce courts at Cosmo Park, 1615 Business Loop 70 West, on Wednesday, July 10 at 5:15 p.m.

Bocce, also known as Italian lawn bowling, is one of the most widely played games in the world and is one of the oldest lawn or yard games. The bocce courts are the first of its kind in the city. The new four-court complex will be open for public use but will be used largely by the City’s Special Olympics program. Previously, Special Olympics athletes used grassy areas in parks to practice bocce.

The grand opening event will feature a short program, a ceremonial "first throw," and hot dogs, chips and beverages. Attendees are encouraged to park at either Dexheimer or Rapp Shelters at Cosmo. The bocce courts are located near those two shelters as well as the tennis courts.

The bocce courts were funded by the Park Sales Tax, which was approved by voters in 2015.
