(COLUMBIA, MO) - On Saturday, Feb 23, 40 City of Columbia surplus computers will find new homes in Columbia households. The City, the Voluntary Action Center (VAC) and the Downtown Optimist Club partner each year to provide surplus (used) computers and equipment to eligible VAC clients as part of the Homes for Computers Program. The surplus computers are being donated to clients who are enrolled in VAC programs and who applied and were found eligible for the computer giveaway.
Clients selected for a computer have already been contacted by VAC and will receive their computer Saturday, Feb. 23 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Downtown Optimist Club Building, 1201 Grand Ave. The Boone County Sheriff’s Department will also provide training on internet safety during the distribution.
The Homes for Computers Program was approved by City Council December 2003. Prior to this program, the City disposed of surplus computers through the University of Missouri, Surplus Property Division. The City determined that donating the computers to families in Columbia was a better alternative. This year’s program will bring the number of donated computers to more than 600.
Questions about the giveaway should be directed to Christy Lowe, staff member at the Voluntary Action Center, at 573.874.2273.
