(COLUMBIA, MO) - On Sunday, January 20, 2018 the Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial structure fire at 1714 East Broadway, apartment A at 2:49pm. The address for this call was initially reported as 4 Fyfer Place. That was the address of the caller notifying 911.
Fire crews arrived less than five minutes later and observed heavy smoke and fire coming from a window in apartment A. Crews performed an aggressive exterior fire attack using a preconnected hoseline and then transitioned to an interior attack. The fire was brought under control in approximately ten minutes and contained to apartment A.
Assistant Fire Marshal Kyle Edwards was dispatched to the scene to perform a fire origin and cause investigation. He determined the fire originated in the kitchen and was the result of unattended cooking. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $175,000. The apartment had working smoke alarms.
Eight units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this call. There were no reported injuries. The occupants are displaced and working with the Red Cross on temporary accommodations.
