Commercial Structure Fire on Jamesdale Road

(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial structure fire at 3310 Jamesdale Road on December 7, 2018 at 11:56pm.

Crews arrived approximately five minutes later and observed heavy fire coming from the second story of a four plex apartment building, unit 201.  The company officer was advised by tenants that there may still be occupants inside.  He then upgraded to a second alarm, calling for more personnel and equipment.

Fire crews deployed a preconnected hoseline and began an aggressive fire attack on the second floor.  All occupants were accounted for and the fire was brought under control in approximately 20 minutes.  The fire was contained to unit 201.  There was water damage to the unit below it, unit 101.  One person received minor injuries to their foot from glass on the ground.  There were no other reported injuries.  The building had working smoke alarms that alerted residents of the fire.

Assistant Fire Marshal Shawn McGruder responded to the scene to perform a fire origin and cause investigation.  The area of origin was the living room of unit 201.  The cause was determined to be improperly discarded smoking material.  A damage estimate has not been determined.  Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Nine units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this call.  The Red Cross was notified and is assisting residents that are displaced.
