41st Annual Heritage Festival & Craft Show set for Sept. 15-16

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

The 41st Annual Heritage Festival and Craft Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 15 and 16 at Nifong Park, 3700 Ponderosa St. Organized by Columbia Parks and Recreation, this free festival features traditional and roots entertainment on three stages and a handmade craft show. Reenactors, artisans and tradespersons dressed in 19th century attire will demonstrate their "lost" trades and sell their wares.

The Heritage Festival will also feature a cowboy camp and an expanded mountain man camp. Visitors will be able to take hayrides around the park and try out crafts and games in the "Fun For Young’uns" area. Area FFA students will provide farm animals for children to see.

Live entertainment will include a variety of musical genres, including Celtic, Cajun, blues, folk, western and bluegrass. Traditional storytellers, magicians and favorites Haskell Indian Nations Dancers will return to the Heritage Festival this year, as will blues musician Lem Sheppard and the Kansas City Celtic Pipe and Drum Corps.

A new entertainer this year is the Julian Davis Band, champion flat picker and mandolin player.

The Boone County History & Culture Center will be open and will be admission-free. Families are welcome to tour the 12,000 square foot museum and art gallery. Hundreds of items are on display in addition to featured exhibits. John William "Blind" Boone's 1891 custom-made grand piano and an art exhibit can be found in the Montminy Art Gallery. Other venues at Nifong Park that will be available for Heritage Festival visitors will include three structures at the Village at Boone Junction and the historic Maplewood Home.

Shuttle parking for the Heritage Festival will be available at nearby Gans Creek Recreation Area, 3360 E. Gans Road. The Heritage Festival is coordinated by Columbia Parks and Recreation and sponsored by Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau, KPLA 101.5, KFRU 1400, the Missouri Arts Council and the Missourian.
