Grand opening scheduled Aug. 15 for new Columbia Police substation donated by Columbia Insurance Group
(COLUMBIA, MO) - One Columbia neighborhood will soon open a new place for police officers to work and interact with residents, thanks to the gracious donation of a local business. The new Columbia Police Department substation is set to open at 2102 White Gate Drive, the home office of Columbia Insurance Group. A grand opening ceremony will take place at the substation Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 4 p.m. Residents are encouraged to come out and enjoy the event.
Columbia Police Department Community Outreach Unit (COU) officers were approached by the business in January with the idea. Construction on Columbia Insurance Group's existing building began shortly thereafter. The space includes an area for officers to complete tasks such as report writing, as well as a meeting room for citizens and officers to interact. The renovation costs for the space were covered entirely by Columbia Insurance Group.
COU Supervisor Sgt. Michael Hestir has been working with Columbia Insurance Group since COU's inception. He says the group is committed to community policing and bonding the neighborhood it's been in for years.
"This is an exciting development," Hestir said. "The substation will provide officers a space to meet with citizens and hear their concerns, then work with them on neighborhood solutions."
Hestir says the substation will also keep officers in the area, helping citizens more. Officers will not have to commute downtown to the department as often to complete tasks, but instead, utilize the space at the substation to do so and be able to stay in this area for quicker response to citizens.
"Columbia Insurance Group has invested in the community to improve relations between residents and police, and we are extremely grateful," Hestir said.
