Utility customers have received phone calls from individuals claiming to be City of Columbia employees and demanding payment for a delinquent utility bill. The caller states their account is delinquent and facing immediate shut-off if the bill is not paid over the phone.
The set-up appears very legitimate. Scammers provide "claim numbers" and "employee identification numbers" and call from phone numbers appearing to be from the City.
The City of Columbia will never call and demand payment for utilities by phone.
Here are some safety tips:
If you have information about a fraud, report it to your local law enforcement agency via their non-emergency number 3-1-1. You may also contact the City of Columbia Utility Customer Service at 573-874-7380 if you have questions about your utility billing.
