(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia Regional Airport will host a brief ceremony on Monday, November 20 at 10 am at Columbia Regional Airport, 11200 S Airport Drive in Hanger 120 to reopen Runway 13-31. City Manager Mike Matthes, Airport Manager Mike Parks, and Justin Gay with Emery Sapp & Sons, the general contractor, will make brief remarks. After the remarks in Hanger 120, a ribbon cutting by the Columbia Chamber of Commerce Chamber Ambassadors will take place on the runway before a general aviation aircraft performs the inaugural takeoff from the runway.
Identified in the 2009 Airport Master Plan as being obsolete, the new runway has been re-positioned to the southeast to improve safety by allowing better line of site for pilots on the south end of the main runway 2-20; was widened from 75 to 100 feet; lengthen from 4,400 to 5,500 feet; the asphalt surface replaced with concrete and a full length taxiway added. The old runway was restricted to light general aviation aircraft while the new runway is capable of handling modern commercial jet aircraft. The new runway is designated as a cross wind runway and will allow additional options for commercial aircraft to land when winds are not from the prevailing direction.
Those who plan to attend are requested to park in the marked "Cell Phone Lot" which is a short walk to Hanger 120. Water and coffee will be available at the event.
