Columbia Public Works announced on Thursday, Nov. 16 that Engineering Surveys & Services plans to perform soil borings that require various partial shoulder closures and center lane closures along Nifong Boulevard between Forum Boulevard and Providence Road. These closures are scheduled to occur during daytime hours on Nifong, Forum, and Bethel, Nov. 20-23, weather permitting.
Partial center lane closures will occur on Forum, north and south of the intersection with Nifong; on Bethel, south of Nifong; and on Nifong between Providence and Santiago Drive.
This work is associated with the Nifong Improvement Project (Providence to Willowcreek). Funding for this project was approved by voters in 2015 and the project is going through the preliminary design and public involvement process. A public interested parties meeting was held on Oct. 26. This improvement would add two additional through lanes, bike lanes, sidewalks and intersection improvements along Nifong between Providence and Willowcreek.
"The borings will help engineers determine the condition of the pavement and shoulders for the potential widening phase of the project," Engineering Supervisor Allison Anderson said. "A date for the public hearing before City Council has not been determined yet."
Motorists, pedestrians and nonmotorized transportation users are urged to exercise extreme caution when in the work zone or use an alternate route.
More information about the Nifong Improvement project (Providence to Willowcreek) is available online at www.como.gov/publicworks/nifong-corridor or by calling Public Works at 573-874-2489.
