[Rain Delay Update] Rollins Street, Brandon Road scheduled to open Oct. 10

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

UPDATE DETAILS: Due to rain last week, the opening of Rollins Street and Brandon Road have been delayed from Oct. 7 to Oct. 10. Tonight crews plans to paint crosswalks, weather permitting. Once that has been completed, the roads should be able to open. An announcement will be made when these streets open and access to Bingham Road from Providence closes.

Rollins Street, Brandon Road scheduled to open Oct. 7; Bingham Road access to close; project scheduled for completion in early November

Columbia Public Works announced on Oct. 3 that the
Rollins Street and Brandon Road intersections are scheduled to open Saturday, Oct. 7, weather permitting. This week, workers are constructing a median island for the turn lanes and installing signs, weather permitting.

Once these intersections are completely open to traffic, the access to Bingham Road from Providence Road is scheduled to close for construction. Access to Bingham will be available via Brandon Road.

Bingham road is the last intersection of the Providence Road Improvement Project and is estimated to be completed by early November. The sidewalk along Burnam Road is also expected to be completed by early November.

Providence will continue to remain open during the work. Motorists, pedestrians and nonmotorized transportation users are urged to exercise extreme caution when passing through the work zone.

Project Phase Updates:

  • New Traffic Signals: Installation of traffic signals along Providence Road at the intersection with Burnam Road and at the intersection with Turner Avenue.  
    Progress: Signals went online Aug. 14.
  • Traffic Signal Removal: Removal of the existing traffic signal along Providence Road at the intersection with Rollins Street.
    Progress:The signal was turned off and signal heads bagged on Aug. 14. Poles and bases were removed the week of Aug. 14. A right-turn lane has been constructed for northbound Providence onto Rollins as well as sidewalks and new pavement. The intersection is scheduled to open Oct. 7, weather permitting.
  • New Sidewalk: Construction of a sidewalk along the south side of Burnam Road from Birch Road to Providence Road.  
    Progress: The sidewalk along Burnam Road is expected to be completed by early November, weather permitting.
  • Two Signalized Crosswalks: Enhancing the crosswalks at the signalized intersections at Turner and Burnam to meet or exceed current standards, including pedestrian signals.  
    Progress: These went into service Aug. 14.
  • Southbound right turn lane: Extension of the southbound right turn lane onto Stadium Boulevard from Providence Road.
    Progress: Expected to be completed the week of Oct. 9, weather permitting.  
  • Intersection access improvements: The intersections of Providence Road with Bingham Road and Kentucky Boulevard will be converted to right-in/right-out/left-in. The intersections of Providence Road with Rollins Street and Brandon Road will be converted to right-in/right-out.  
    Progress: Kentucky Boulevard is completed. Bingham is scheduled to close Oct. 7, once Brandon Road is open. The Brandon Road intersection is scheduled to open Oct. 7, weather permitting.
  • Median Islands: Median islands to be constructed on Providence Road between Turner Avenue and Burnam.
    Progress: Completed Sept. 11-13.
