UPDATE DETAILS: Public Works construction engineers have decided to push back the traffic signal switch over to 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14. The transition was originally scheduled for the afternoon of Aug. 11.
"Waiting until Monday will give us more time to test the system before going live, and we will also have more personnel on hand to monitor the signal and traffic flow," Construction Project Superintendent David Fennewald said.
The Providence Road Improvement Project remains on schedule for completion by early fall 2017. Project progress and other details are available throughout the summer and early fall at CoMo.gov/PublicWorks/Providence-improvement.

Original Press Release - Aug. 10:
Three major phases of the Providence Road Improvement Project are scheduled to begin Aug. 11, weather permitting.
1) New traffic signals and pedestrian crossings on Providence are scheduled to begin service. 2) The Rollins Street signal will be deactivated and removed. 3) Access to Rollins Street is closing for construction.
Columbia Public Works announced on Wednesday, Aug. 9, that on Friday, Aug. 11, the newly installed Providence Road traffic signals and pedestrian crossings at Burnam Road and Turner Avenue/University Heights are scheduled to begin service. Additionally, the Rollins Street signal will go out of service, and access to Rollins will close for construction of new pavement, sidewalks and a right-turn lane.
"Extension of the southbound right-turn lane onto Stadium from Providence Road is in progress as well, and the intersection at Brandon Road and Providence will close in the next week to facilitate the improvements at Brandon Road," Construction Project Superintendent David Fennewald said. "The intersection at Kentucky has already been completed."
Providence will continue to remain open during the work. Motorists, pedestrians and nonmotorized transportation users are urged to exercise extreme caution when passing through the work zone.

Project Phase Updates:
- New Traffic Signals: Installation of traffic signals along Providence Road at the intersection with Burnam Road and at the intersection with Turner Avenue.
Progress: Signals are expected to go online Aug. 11.
- Traffic Signal Removal: Removal of the existing traffic signal along Providence Road at the intersection with Rollins Street.
Progress:The signal will be turned off and signal heads bagged on Aug. 11. Poles and bases are expected to be removed the week of Aug. 14. A right-turn lane is being constructed for northbound Providence onto Rollins as well as sidewalks and new pavement.
- New Sidewalk: Construction of a sidewalk along the south side of Burnam Road from Birch Road to Providence Road.
Progress:This phase of the project is scheduled to be one of the last items on the project so that intersections are completed first.
- Two Signalized Crosswalks: Enhancing the crosswalks at the signalized intersections at Turner and Burnam to meet or exceed current standards, including pedestrian signals.
Progress: Aug. 11 is the expected date to bring these online.
- Southbound right-turn lane: Extension of the southbound right-turn lane onto Stadium Boulevard from Providence Road.
Progress:The contractor is working in this area now.
- Intersection access improvements: The intersections of Providence Road with Bingham Road and Kentucky Boulevard will be converted to right-in/right-out/left-in. The intersections of Providence Road with Rollins Street and Brandon Road will be converted to right-in/right-out.
Progress:Kentucky Boulevard is completed. Bingham will be the last intersection to be worked on. Converting the Rollins Street and Brandon Road intersections is currently in progress.
