Columbia Police officers responded to a rolling exchange of gunfire early this morning on Business Loop. Boone County Joint Communication first received calls regarding shots fired in the 500 block of College Avenue at 1:17 a.m. Calls continued to come in regarding gunfire along Business Loop 70 westbound and surrounding areas.
The preliminary investigation revealed the gunfire began in the 500 block of College Avenue between occupants of at least two vehicles. The vehicles proceeded to travel westbound on Business Loop 70 continuing the exchange of rounds. As the vehicles approached 205 Business Loop 70, McDonald's, the vehicles turned down side streets and then proceeded back out to westbound Business Loop 70 as a far as Garth Avenue. Several businesses and vehicles were struck by gunfire along the route. Officers recovered several shell casings from multiple styles of firearms throughout the area. At this time, there have been no reported injuries as a result of the fired rounds.
Officers closed an area of Business Loop 70 from Indiana Avenue to Garth Avenue from approximately 1:37 a.m. to 2:17 a.m. during the investigation. The vehicles believed to be involved include a newer, dark colored SUV and a lighter colored Mercedes-style vehicle. The total amount of property damage is undetermined at this time. The investigation is on-going.
