Public Works returns to treating priority streets, not all neighborhoods treated

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

Situation Summary: Air temperatures stayed about 33 deg through the early morning hours, pavement temperatures hovered around 31-32 - some melting occurred, but ice lingered on untreated locations. Crews have completed treating about ¼ of subwards with another ¼ mostly treated. If at all possible people should not travel today. Temperatures are currently right at freezing and falling. Melting wet pavement in treated and untreated locations will begin freezing quickly in the morning hours. Roads that have been treated will likely re-freeze as well since much of the salt will be dissipated by the water. There are some abandoned vehicles that will make treating roads in some locations difficult. We will pull out of subwards and re-treat priority routes beginning at 7 AM. Freezing drizzle is anticipated first about 8 am with dry snow following late afternoon. Temps are forecast to fall to single digits by this evening. We are not sure how much snow we will get, but people should not park on priority routes. It can not be stressed enough that attempting to travel tonight will be dangerous as extremely low temperatures will make salt ineffective and people stranded or caught in the cold will be at risk of exposure.
