Today, Monday, May 23rd, and Tuesday, May 24th, the Columbia Fire Department is conducting training at 710 south College. There will be simulated smoke in the area.
Columbia Firefighters are training on Rapid Intervention techniques. This training involves the firefighters entering the structure and rescuing a "downed firefighter". They are practicing the techniques used to search for, assess and remove a victim from a completely visually obscured environment.
We implemented these new techniques in January at the Phi Delta Theta house at 101 Burnam Road. We are now using the Sigma NU house today and tomorrow to practice these techniques.
It is very useful for the firefighters to be able to training in structures which they are not familiar. It gives a much more realistic training then using our training facility for every training scenario.
The training started at 8 a.m. and will last until 6 p.m. tonight.
