The Columbia Police Department, in cooperation with the Columbia Public Schools, is happy to announce the release of our new School Resource Officer uniforms.
The uniforms are referred to as "soft uniforms," and are intended to help the School Resource Officers appear more approachable to students - an extension of the community policing model. Officer Sean Dutton, David H. Hickman High School, Officer Keisha Edwards, Rock Bridge High School, and Officer Corey Bowden, Muriel Battle High School, were equipped with the new attire. The uniforms embody the school spirit of each high school with their color scheme being consistent with the respective school colors.
"Our officers work every day with these young adults and they have a lot of pride in the work they do. If placing them in these soft uniforms makes the overall environment healthier, it's a win for everyone," says Assistant Chief John Gordon.
The uniforms replaced the officers' normal patrol uniforms with funds retained from the uniform account. No additional expense occurred.
