The Columbia Police Department Traffic Unit and the Downtown Unit will be conducting a Bicycle Safety Campaign this week. In an effort to help bicyclists understand the importance of riding safely and using front and rear lights at night to be more visible, officers will be conducting bicycle stops and issuing warnings for violations. We will also be handing out free light packets to those found to be bicycling without the proper lights. The light packets are courtesy of GetAboutColumbia.
We will have a briefing Thursday, April 30th at 6:30 p.m. in the 3rd Floor Conference Room and media is invited to attend.
Common Violations we will be looking for:
- Illegal to ride a bicycle on a sidewalk in the downtown district
- Bicyclist failed to obey traffic control devices
- Riding a bicycle at night without proper lighting
If you plan to attend the briefing or have questions, please contact the Public Relations Unit at [email protected].
